History of Sugar Factories Ltd

The neighbouring to the present "Sugar Factories Ltd" confectionery manufacture  named  "Obreshkov" was acquired in 1927 year by the Chech engineer Pitska. For the needs of the manufacturing process  the same year began  the construction of plant for production of glucose.

Thus, in the late 20's of last century Rudolf Pitska created a complex of enterprises which  production today we can call non-waste.

At the end of July 1948 all the factories owned by the Bulgarian-Chech enterprise became a state property. The composition of the new state company included all the factories owned by the Company except the coal mine and seed manufacturing station "Angie" which continued to develop independently.

Contrary to the sad fate of many nationalized businesses, "Sugar factory" bloomed in its development.

General reconstruction of the of sugar plant was made in the period 1959-1960 year..
In 1960 for the needs of sugar plant was built its own heating station.
Due to the improvements and automation of the process in 1965 the sugar factory became the largest on the Balkan Peninsula factory for refined sugar.
A major reconstruction of the plant for spirit was made in the same year.
Meanwhile some of the existing production lines were closed. The operation and functions at factories for glucose ,ceramics workshops and production of potassium carbonate and shpodium were ceased.
Two new enterprises were launched in 1969-1970: Repair-
Mechanical plant and Packaging plant.

Today ZAHARTNI PLANTS PLC is the largest complex in Bulgaria for  production of sugar and its derived products.  Located on an area of 1300 acres, the company includes the following divisions: Plant sugar confectionery factory, Plant for alcohol, Packaging Plant, Repair- Mechanical Plant, Thermal power plants.

Engineer Rudolf Pitska was born in 1881 in the Czech Republic. After he studied chemistry at Prague Polytechnic, he worked in sugar factories in Moravia and Romania, and in 1909 assumed the post of director of a sugar factory in Belgrade. Found opportunities for investments in the Balkans, he returned to Prague, where he began to seek investors for the construction of a sugar factory in Serbia.

For a long time his attempts remained unsuccessful. Fanatically convinced that he is on the right track, not being discouraged, and after enormous efforts engineer Pitska received support from Prague Credit Bank - one of the largest banks in the Czech Republic at the time, which agreed to build a factory for production of sugar in Serbia's town of Chupriya.

Construction completed in 1911year.That same year Rudolf Pitska prepared a new project - the construction for sugar factory in Bulgaria.
After building a factory in Gorna Oryahovitsa engineer Pitska was appointed the first Director and Chief of Bulgarian-Czech Ltd Sugar Industry ".
He died in 1952 at 71 years of age.
Sugar factory in Chuprya still exists today bears the name "Selk 911".
